Chat with a PDF without reading every page first

Drop in a file, ask what you actually need to know, and get replies tied to the words inside that PDF — not a random web search.

What this free PDF chat does

Most PDF tools either summarize the whole thing in one go or make you copy chunks into another app. Here you upload once, then talk to the document: “What did they agree to in section 4?” or “List every date mentioned.” The assistant reads the extracted text from your file and answers from that material. If the answer is not in the PDF, you should get a straight “not found” rather than a guess pulled from thin air.

It is a preview of our Pro Chat with PDF workspace — same idea, smaller limits, and nothing saved to your account on the free tier. Compare Pro plans when you outgrow the caps.

How to use it

Takes about a minute once you have a text-based PDF ready.

  1. Upload

Choose a PDF up to 10 MB. Drag-and-drop works. Image-only scans without OCR will not give useful text.

  2. Load

Hit Load PDF. We pull out readable text and show how many words made it in (and whether anything was cut off).

  3. Ask

Type a question or tap a suggestion. You get up to 8 questions per file on the free plan.

Who tends to use it

No single perfect audience — but these show up a lot:

Students

Skim a long reading by asking for definitions, timelines, or the author’s main claim instead of highlighting everything.

Freelancers & contractors

Check SOWs, NDAs, or client briefs for payment terms and deadlines before you sign.

Researchers

Pull names, sample sizes, or limitations from a paper when you only need one section.

Everyday paperwork

Lease addenda, insurance packets, tax PDFs — the stuff you would rather not re-read line by line.

Free tier limits (plain English)

We cap usage so the free tool stays usable for everyone. Current numbers:

Privacy note: Free sessions live in temporary server cache — not in your account history. Close the tab or wait for the session to expire and you will need to upload again. Need saved chats, bigger files, and no daily cap? See Pro plans.

Already summarizing text elsewhere on the site? The free AI summarizer handles paste, files, and the URL tab (URL summarizer / article summarizer for web pages). This page is for back-and-forth questions on a single PDF only.

Common questions

No sign-in required for the free preview. Guests may see a quick security check (reCAPTCHA). Logged-in users share the same limits unless they upgrade to Pro.

Very long documents hit a character cap during extraction. The chat still works on the portion we could read — usually the start of the file. Pro Chat with PDF handles much larger files for subscribers.

If the PDF stores tables as real text, yes. Pure images (screenshots of charts, scanned pages) are not read unless the file already has embedded text from OCR.

Same core flow — upload, extract, ask — but Pro allows much larger documents, unlimited daily use on our side, saved chat history in your workspace, and higher message limits per session.

Try a short summary in five bullets, then narrow down: dates, dollar amounts, names, or “explain section 2 in plain language.” Specific questions almost always beat vague ones like “tell me everything.”
